Is it possible to fish with your rod tips under water and use some sort of bobbin for indication, this could solve your problem as long as the flow isn't fast, something i sometimes do on the Thames...

I experimented with backleads of various types a while back and to be honest I just couldn't get along with them on moving water they really didn't leave me "feeling" confident in my rig at all.
